Their Name is Today

I went to a day care conference on Columbus Day and everyone who attended was given a copy of the book Their Name is Today: Reclaiming Childhood in a Hostile World . I read through it in record time and really enjoyed the book. It has hard truths, kindly told with ideas on how to move forward in parenting in this time. There was a number on the back of the book that said I could request additional copies so I called and was able to get a copy for each of my day care families. I was so excited to hand them out in the last two days! I hope it helps them a little bit. Its not easy to take the road less traveled but so important for our kids to at least try.
I am also reading Written in My Own Heart’s Blood which is the latest book in the Outlander series. I really enjoy these books! After all the trips to National Parks this summer its a lot of fun because I can at least imagine the landscape where the story is taking place. On the one hand I think it would be wonderful fun to go back in time and meet George Washington but on the other it would make me a nervous wreck!
I am still working on socks for myself and using that as a travel project. I am also working on a hat for Brian! Its using this pattern and hopefully it will fit and be the style he likes when I am done!

Christman Sanctuary

We kept hearing about the Christman Sanctuary from different people as a great place for an easy afternoon hike especially for our 4H kids. We decided to check it out for ourselves this weekend and discovered that no one was steering us in the wrong direction! It was a very easy hike through a field and woods to end near a stream that included waterfalls. Dramatic waterfalls! There was a small “lean to” near the largest waterfall. It was not my kind of lean to because it didn’t have a floor to get you up out of the muck! However it would keep the rain off your head! It did have a table someone had made so I spread out the picnic blanket and our “snacky” lunch and we ate while watching the waterfall. Maddie had her large camera along but was disappointed with many of her photos. She needs some more lessons and practice with low lighting. Some of the ones she took of the waterfall were beautiful though!

All of the sudden Maddie said "I know! Hey Momma! I change the shutter speed and now the water looks better." As I was looking through her photos I suspect this is the spot where she did that.

Adirondack Museum–as you can see it was a rainy, misty and cold day! We couldn’t take many inside the buildings due to the lighting and signs asking us not to use flash photography. We ended up just enjoying our time inside and warming up!!

Oh My Goodness! She is 11!

I am a bit late…well, maybe a month late with this post! Fall is always a very busy time at our house. Its our favorite time of year! Fall also means Maddie’s birthday followed closely by our anniversary. This year I suggested to Maddie that we do some special things with just one friend. Maddie was willing, her friend was able so that’s exactly what we did! We started off by heading to the Saratoga Battlefield to visit Maddie’s favorite Park Rangers and visit the encampment. We stopped at the visitor center for a while then headed off down the tour road to the American Camp. The girls were able to participate in a lesson in drilling with the drum! We also had a special scavenger hunt to complete so we were busy looking for clues.

Its hard to believe that she is 11! She was having a wonderful time with her new camera from Poppa Bill.

After that we moved on to the British Camp. Here we saw another Ranger friend and met with some interesting people!!

We saw black squirrels 2 times near the visitor center. I managed to catch this one but only just!

The next day we spent having cake and ice cream with all Maddie’s grandparents! On Monday, the actual birthday day, we went to the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake. Unlike Maddie’s real birth day it was wet, cold and rainy! We didn’t let it stop us and had a good time checking out the different buildings and displays. We were very happy however to discover they had soup in the cafeteria to go along with our sandwiches from home!

This was taken at 11:30 when Maddie was officially 11! Apparently Momma needs to let those pants down again…we have a lot of sock showing!

Flower press in the “Glamping” exhibit. Some of the things they used to take along on these “camping” trips astounded us! There was a pictures of Henry Ford with 2 other famous men. They went camping with something like 40 cars along to carry all the equipment! Phew!
